Christopher Gentle

Director, FlatMap IT Pty Ltd

Summary

More than 30 years in software development and 25+ years in leadership and management. Smart, inventive, broad in experience, and a delight to work with. I have led teams of all sizes — small developer teams and multi-disciplinary teams across cultures, geographies and responsibilities — in roles including team leader, development manager, systems engineering manager, portfolio manager, project manager, scrum master, and consultant.

Alongside technical leadership I keep strong technical skills and hands-on involvement in the work. Recent projects emphasise radiology clinical integrations — HL7, DICOM and AI workflows on Kailo Hub and Rhapsody integration engines — alongside post-marketing surveillance clinical registry technology, and business analysis.

Experience

Director / Consultant | FlatMap IT Pty Ltd

2015 – Present

Founded FlatMap IT in 2015, initially to provide consulting and software development for Boston Children's Hospital / Harvard Medical School's Computational Health and Informatics Program (CHIP), and since expanded to other clients. Work spans project management, software development, agile training, technical interviewing, and standards development. Systems require sophisticated handling of security, Australian and US medical information and privacy laws, and data protection regulations.

Recent emphasis — Radiology clinical integrations (Kailo Hub & Rhapsody):

  • I-MED Radiology Network (2020–2025): Business analysis, design and implementation of HL7, DICOM and web service integrations covering manual and AI workflows; IT project and change management; project design and architecture review across the I-MED national footprint.
  • Alfred Medical Imaging — Nepean Blue Mountains LHD / Lithgow Hospital migration: Large, complex modernisation of the clinical integration to NSW eHealth Sectra / Karisma with Comrad RIS and IntelePACS. Project management, design and implementation of the migration to I-MED's core network, consolidation onto a Kailo Hub integration broker, VeloCloud secure remote access, and emergency downtime survivability channels and workflows.
  • Far-West & Western NSW LHDs teleradiology integration: NSW eHealth Sectra / Karisma to I-MED Comrad and IntelePACS integration delivered on the Kailo Hub integration engine.
  • I-MED overflow and out-of-hours teleradiology workflow: Comrad, Kailo Hub, Intelligo and Medicalis HL7 / DICOM workflows enabling flexible, reliable teleradiology reporting for regional and remote locations across Alfred Medical Imaging and I-TeleRAD.
  • National Lung Screening Program registry integration: Workflow improvements transforming order and reporting content from Comrad and Medicalis for the Australian Federal Government's registry.
  • Rhapsody integration engine: HL7 / DICOM channel design, message routing and transformation work complementing Kailo Hub deployments in clinical imaging environments.
  • Business and Strategic Analysis: Stakeholder interviews, review of goals, technology, and performance metrics; preparation and presentation of papers with tactical and strategic recommendations.

Boston Children's Hospital / Harvard Medical School CHIP — signature projects:

  • BCH FDA U24 grant: "Expanding HL7 FHIR to support chronic disease registries." Cryptographic provenance for reported observations and an immutable journal for auditability and repeatability in clinical research and FDA decision-making. Engagement with the FHIR Security Standards workgroup and the FDA project office. chb.github.io/fhir21cfr11
  • BCH CARRA Registry: ODM to i2b2 and ODM to FHIR gateways — lossless conversion of Medidata RAVE ODM contacts and observation data into i2b2 and HAPI FHIR registries (CARRA / BCH / DCRI).
  • BCH PCORI PARTNERS Web of Engagement: Payload encryption of FDA MyStudies enrolment and result data for Internet-facing PROs in a GCP-hosted secure data warehouse, with Duke CRI, Cincinnati Children's Medical Center and UCSF.
  • BCH Privacy-Preserving enrolment and consent gateway: Jurisdiction- and study-aware web/app consent API covering assent, consent, aging out, reconsent etc., with no personally identifying information stored in Internet-facing services.
  • CARRA registries: ETL, data warehousing and data vending in support of the non-profit Childhood Arthritis & Rheumatology Research Alliance, federating cohorts of children with rare rheumatic diseases to power research into cures and treatments.

Other FlatMap IT projects:

  • VitalCare Rosie: Prototyped, designed and built a cloud call-centre concierge service and a personal safety alarm gateway supporting a range of devices and legacy integrations. Stack: Terraform, AWS, Twilio, Scala Play Framework, JavaScript; optional JIRA Service Desk integration for agent selection, problem resolution and outbound campaigns. Hybrid mobile-IVR and web agent experience for agents working from home across Australia.
  • Climate Friendly: Design and vendor selection. Container-based microservice framework for large-scale GIS and carbon-abatement accounting with strong regulatory compliance, including web-service encapsulation of the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water's Full Carbon Accounting Model (FullCAM).
